Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Operation Theatre and Anaesthesia Technology is a four-year undergraduate programme that includes a one-year mandatory internship in the field of health science. These medical professionals are an essential part of the operation unit team, working alongside the surgeon, anaesthesiologist, and nurse to provide quality patient care throughout the procedure. These technologist ensure that every process in the operating room is as secure. Their primary responsibility is to oversee all aspects of the operation theatre, including the sterilisation of surgical instruments, the preparation of the dressing table, the operation theatre table, the instrument table, and the anaesthesia table.

Anaesthesia technologist are involved in patient care during peri-operative (before, during, and after surgery) anaesthetic care, taking religious and cultural beliefs into account and respecting patients' right to medical privacy and dignity at all times. Anaesthesia technologist also play an important role in patient resuscitation in an emergency.

At the end of course students are trained in the pharmacology of anaesthetic and non-anaesthetic drugs, their preparation, dilution and labeling.They are trained in preparing anaesthesia trolleys, checking suction machines, gas system operation, working of OT tables, various gases used in OT, usage of inhalational agents etc.They assist with the administration and monitoring of anaesthesia and have extensive knowledge of anaesthesia techniques,instruments,supplies and technology.

Eligibility for Admission

  • Candidates belonging to all categories for admission to the Allied Health Sciences should have passed the qualifying examinations after period of 12 years of study with English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology / Botany & Zoology with minimum 65% marks in each subjects (Academic / Vocational Stream).

Dr.Kanagarajan Natarajan is the Course Director for the B.Sc Operation Theatre & Anaesthesia Technology and a Senior Consultant, Cardiac Anaesthesia, Madras Medical Mission in Chennai. He has over 22 years of experience in this field. He has completed MBBS from Madurai Medical College, Madurai in the year 1992,in the year 1998 M.D (Anaesthesiology ) from M.P.Shah Medical College ,Jamnagar,Gujarat.also he has done his P.D.C.C(Post-doctoral certificate course) in Cardiac Anaesthesia And Critical Care in 2001 from Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Madras Medical Mission, Chennai, India

He has done Speciality Training for three weeks of observership in Cardiovascular Surgical ICU at Auckland city Hospital, Auckland, and Newzeland. Four weeks training in Paediatric Cardiac Anaesthesia at Starship Children Hospital, Auckland, Newzeland. To his credit he has more than 10 publications in international and national journals


Dr. P.Sriram is the Course Director for the B.Sc Operation Theatre & Anaesthesia Technology programme as well as the Madras Medical Mission's Senior Consultant in Gastroenterology. He has over 18 years of experience in advanced laparoscopic surgery, teaching, and administration. Dr. P.Sriram received his MBBS in 1991 from Trunelveli Medical College, his M.S (General Surgery) in 1997 from Madurai Medical College, and his McH (Surgical Gastroenterology) in 2005 from Madras Medical College.

He specialises in all aspects of surgical gastroenterology, including hepatobiliary, pancreatic, oesophageal, and colorectal surgery, as well as extensive experience in laparoscopic surgeries for inguinal and ventral hernias, as well as laparoscopic bariatric surgery.

Hospitals are the primary recruiters of operation theatre and anaesthesia technologists. They work in the operating theatres and emergency departments of hospitals and nursing homes.

Openings are available in the areas of transplant units, orthopaedic clinics, gynaecology units, cancer units, surgery, special care baby units etc. and also in the field of research, education and training. They are appointed in the workplaces of physicians or dentists who perform outpatient surgery.
